Build better future for your children

Mr Felix Ibrahim, the Northern Regional Director of Information Services Department, has called on parents in the region to build a better future for their children by sending them to school.

He said this was the only way the high illiteracy rate in the Region could be reduced.

Mr Ibrahim said this when he launched a one week regional public education campaign on government policies and programmes and on the need for unity, peace and national cohesion.

He said the Metropolitan, Municipal and districts to be covered include, Tamala Metropolitan, Yendi Municipal, Central Gonja and Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo districts.

Mr Ibrahim appealed to the people in the region to sustain the peace they are enjoying for government to implement its development agenda for the Region.

Alhaji Shamrock Abdulai Mahama, Assistant Director of Ghana Education Service said the Yendi Municipality has 96 kindergarten, 160 primary schools and 30 junior high schools which makes it possible for every child to have the opportunity of attending school.

Stephen E. Tawiah when he was found by JOMELOS Gh.

Stephen Egya Tawiah, 9 1/2 old had no choice, school was not an option. He had to join his uncles to go fishing every week.
Child labor is common in certain villages around Komanda, in the central region of Ghana.

A year and a half ago, disaster struck when the canoe they were using caught fire. The lamp they used at night had petrol instead of kerosene. It exploded and fell on Stephen while sleeping. He sustained serious injuries.

As poor as the family was, and the consequences of the police and medical bills; they left Stephen abandoned on the street.
This case came in the spotlight when Jomelos found Stephen begging for food and help. Jomelos then, took care of him. Because of the seriousness of his case, help was sought abroad.

Dr. Danuta Gronikowska from Brussels heard his story.  Through her passion and effort, she persuaded other doctors and the Erasmus Hospital to bring Stephen to Belgium for medical care and plastic surgery. The operation has been estimated to cost 25 000 Euro.

As at now, part of the cost has been sponsored by Erasmus and Brugmann Hospital. The surgery will be performed by Prof. Albert De Mey and Jean-Pierre Moermans who offered their services as a contribution.
